At the 2025 Sunbelt Expo, held on October 17, Kent Hamilton, CEO of Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable, Inc., received the prestigious title of Southeastern Farmer of the Year. The announcement took place during the Annual Willie B. Withers Legislative Luncheon in Moultrie, Georgia. Hamilton’s recognition was met with enthusiastic applause and a standing ovation from attendees, marking a significant moment for both him and the local agricultural community.
Hamilton’s achievement stands out not only because of his individual dedication but also as a reflection of Georgia’s prominence in agriculture this year, having been named the Spotlight State. During his acceptance speech, Hamilton expressed profound gratitude, stating, “Wow! What an honor, y’all. What an honor and what an accomplishment.”
As he addressed the audience, Hamilton took a moment to share a personal story about his late brother, who had inspired him to pursue farming. He recalled, “A long time ago, we had a tragedy in my family… my brother and I started farming together in the mid-Eighties, and he was 2 1/2 years older than me.” Tragically, his brother passed away in a farming accident in 1987. This moment of remembrance added a poignant tone to his speech, as he dedicated the award to his brother.
Hamilton’s faith played a significant role in his success, as he noted, “I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for saving me. It’s been 90% him and 10% me.” He also expressed appreciation for the United States, acknowledging the sacrifices made by military personnel that allow him to pursue his passion for farming.
He extended his gratitude to his family, particularly his mother, who was instrumental in promoting Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable. “My mother… worked hard. She promoted Southern Valley Fruit and Vegetable,” he said, highlighting her dedication to their family business. Hamilton also thanked his wife, Pam, for her unwavering support throughout the years, describing her as “the cheerleader in the background.”
In addition to family, Hamilton recognized his team at Hamilton Growers and Southern Valley, stating, “It’s certainly a team effort for me to be standing here where I’m standing today.” He acknowledged the contributions of employees across various roles, emphasizing the collaborative nature of their success.
Closing his speech, Hamilton expressed appreciation for Chip Blalock, executive director of the Sunbelt Expo, and the organization for hosting the Southeastern Farmer of the Year program. He remarked on the high level of competition among the nominees, affirming his humility in being selected as the final winner.
Hamilton’s recognition as the 2025 Southeastern Farmer of the Year not only celebrates his individual achievements but also highlights the strength of Georgia’s agricultural community. As he reflects on his journey, his story serves as an inspiration to many in the industry, reinforcing the values of perseverance, teamwork, and gratitude.
