Homeowner Lights Up Stilwell with Unique Bow and Arrow Technique

In Stilwell, Kansas, homeowner Tom Barnett has created a remarkable holiday light display featuring over 4,000 lights. This dazzling array has taken Barnett more than 12 years to develop, and he continues to innovate each season to delight passersby.

Barnett emphasizes the importance of keeping the display fresh, stating, “I change it up each year to do something different just so that everybody can smile when they drive by the house.” His efforts have not only sparked joy among his neighbors but have also led him to assist local organizations, including the Arboretum.

The inspiration for his unique lighting technique came from a friend in nearby Mission Hills. Barnett explained, “I learned from a guy in Mission Hills, a friend of ours. And I watched him shoot a potato gun … and I thought, ‘We can do that.'” However, Barnett adapted this method to suit his needs.

Utilizing a bow and arrow, he carefully positions the lights. “A bow and arrow comes in really handy,” he said. Barnett shoots an arrow over a tree limb with fishing line attached. By weighting the arrow’s head, he ensures it drops down, allowing him to tie the fishing line to a rope or string and pull it back over the limb. This technique creates a secure setup for the lights on either side of the branch.

The preparation for this elaborate display begins as early as September, with Barnett dedicating his time through October and into November to finalize his vision. “This is really fun,” he shared. “I get a lot of joy out of doing this. It’s just something to do to make people smile.”

Barnett’s commitment to his craft not only enhances the festive spirit in his community but also reflects a creative approach to holiday decorating that resonates with many.
