The Emerald Keepers’ Coronado Crops program has resumed for 2026, with high school interns actively volunteering to collect surplus fruit from local gardens. The initiative aims to support the Imperial Beach Neighborhood Center Food Pantry, addressing food insecurity in the region. As local fruit trees yield abundant crops, residents are encouraged to donate excess produce such as lemons, oranges, and avocados.
According to the San Diego Food Bank, approximately one in six people in the San Diego region faces food insecurity, impacting around 848,000 residents in San Diego County. This includes 218,000 children, 182,000 older adults, and 137,000 residents living with disabilities. Fresh produce is often scarce at food banks, making these donations crucial for providing nutritious food options to those in need.
Residents interested in donating fruit can easily participate by contacting Emerald Keepers. The high school interns will handle the labor and tools required for harvesting, allowing donors to contribute without any effort on their part. To sign up, individuals can complete an online form or email their request to [email protected]. Interns will confirm a date and time for the harvest.
Beyond helping the community, removing fruit from trees benefits the homeowners as well. When fruit is left unpicked, it can rot and attract pests such as rats and insects, creating additional challenges in maintaining a healthy garden.
Emerald Keepers encourages individuals to share information about the program with neighbors who may have fruit-laden trees. Since its inception in 2024, Coronado Crops has successfully harvested and donated over 1,400 pounds of fresh produce. The goal for this year is to double that amount, but this can only be achieved with community support.
By participating in the Coronado Crops program, residents can help combat food insecurity in their area while contributing to a greener environment. The initiative reflects a commitment to keeping Coronado Emerald Green and Ocean Blue by promoting sustainable practices and supporting those in need.
