Founders Academy Junior Named Finalist for Global Filipino Icon 2026

Serena Althea Blaire D. Mackay, a junior at The Founders Academy Public Charter School in Manchester, NH, has been selected as one of the 10 finalists for the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026. She was chosen from nearly 200 entries worldwide, making her the youngest nominee to reach this prestigious level. The announcement highlights Mackay’s significant contributions to youth advocacy and civic engagement since her arrival in the United States just a year ago.

Mackay, a first-generation immigrant who moved to the U.S. at age 15, has established a remarkable track record. She is the founder and executive director of the LUHOG Youth Organization, a nonprofit network focused on civic education and advocacy for young people across three countries. Her efforts aim to equip young Filipinos with the knowledge and tools necessary to engage with power, history, and policy effectively.

In addition to her work with LUHOG, Mackay played a pivotal role in organizing the webinar titled “MAMULAT: The Pulse of Youth in Political Consciousness,” which centered on the 1987 Philippine Constitution. At just 14 years old, she became the youngest intern for the Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) and contributed to various initiatives related to grant research, database development, and strategies for nonprofit funding.

Mackay’s most notable project was her leadership as the sole project proponent for Tayo’s Annual Virtual Youth Summit in 2025. This summit brought together young Filipino leaders to challenge misinformation and uphold the integrity of historical narratives. Furthermore, she co-founded the Tayo Youth Advisory Council, which integrates youth perspectives into the governance of the organization. As its external chair, she oversees committees that focus on policy advocacy, volunteer engagement, and editorial work.

Reflecting on her transition to life in the United States, Mackay acknowledged the challenges of leaving her family and friends in the Philippines. “Knowing that there is a place like The Founders Academy providing me with a civic education to pursue my work in historical awareness, uplift youth voices, and nurture my love for community service made the adjustment worthwhile,” she said. Mackay added that the support from her peers and dedicated faculty members made her experience enriching.

At The Founders Academy, Mackay’s leadership extends beyond her nonprofit work. She serves as the school’s Student Body Vice President, co-captain of the Speech and Debate Club, and Secretary of the National Honor Society. Cassie Hayes, Dean of the Academy, expressed pride in Mackay’s achievements, stating, “She embodies the Founders’ mission each and every day.”

The finalists for the Emerging Global Filipino Icon 2026 award will be evaluated through a panel discussion to determine the winner during the Global Filipino Icon Awards 2026 ceremony, scheduled for January 31, 2026, in Dubai. The Founders Academy, which serves students in grades 5 through 12, is committed to developing principled leaders who understand the lessons of history and demonstrate exceptional character.
