Experience Holiday Magic at Hotel Del Coronado’s Oz-Inspired Event

The iconic Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego invites visitors to experience a unique holiday celebration with its “Tinsel Trail to Oz.” Running from November 21, 2025 to January 1, 2026, this free, self-guided tour features a whimsical Yellow Brick Road lined with elaborately themed Christmas trees that pay homage to the hotel’s connection to L. Frank Baum’s beloved literary works.

The Hotel Del Coronado holds a significant place in local history, but its ties to Baum’s renowned series, “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz,” are especially noteworthy. The author, who originally hailed from New York but later resided in South Dakota, spent many winters at the hotel with his wife Maud and her mother, Matilda Joslyn Gage, a prominent suffragist and feminist. Gage’s influence is recognized in the character of Glinda the Good Witch, one of Baum’s creations. It was at this picturesque hotel that Baum crafted the second and third installments of the Oz series, namely “Dorothy and the Wizard in Oz” and “The Road to Oz.” Baum even designed the original chandeliers for the hotel’s Coronet Room.

As guests embark on the Tinsel Trail, they can delve into Baum’s fascinating connection to the hotel and discover how it influenced the enchanting world of Oz. Key highlights along the trail include the “The Road to Oz” Tree, which reaches two stories in height and is adorned with 10,000 lights and 2,000 ornaments. Another standout is “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Tree, located near the hotel’s beachfront ice-skating rink.

In addition to the impressive trees, visitors can enjoy a stroll along a Yellow Brick Road situated in the Garden Courtyard. This area features four twelve-foot Christmas trees, each showcasing the festive essence of Oz. Guests can also enjoy refreshments while taking in the magical atmosphere inspired by the classic tales.

The event is accessible to the public daily, with a few exceptions for the trees in the Crown & Coronet Rooms and specific dates in December when the Gardens will be temporarily closed. A full schedule detailing availability is available on the Hotel Del Coronado’s official website, allowing guests to plan their visit accordingly.

With its rich history and enchanting holiday display, the Hotel Del Coronado offers a memorable experience for families and fans of all ages, celebrating the timeless magic of Oz in a stunning seaside setting.
