Designer Transforms Victorian Home in Massachusetts into Vibrant Space

Interior designer Jess Cooney has successfully transformed a once-sterile Victorian home in Great Barrington, MA, into a lively and inviting space, reflecting the personalities of its owners. The house, previously characterized by bland gray floors and white walls, now bursts with color and character, perfectly suited for a pair of grandparents who enjoy hosting their large family.

Cooney, founder of Jess Cooney Interiors, recognized that the original decor lacked warmth and personality. “When I first saw this house, it felt very sterile,” she explained. Her goal was to create an environment that felt energized and welcoming while incorporating a butler’s pantry to enhance functionality.

To achieve this, Cooney focused on layering spaces with unique decor elements that echoed throughout the home. “Each space had to have its own personality,” she noted, emphasizing the importance of cohesive design.

Revamping the Heart of the Home

The kitchen underwent significant changes, including the addition of a bold black island that serves as a central focal point. “The house has very strong lines, and I wanted to lean into that with a big, bold kitchen island,” Cooney stated. The previous all-white design felt conventional, and the black island redefined the room’s aesthetic, giving it a contemporary flair.

Another major addition was the butler’s pantry, which the homeowners specifically requested. Cooney cleverly designed it within a narrow hallway leading to the dining room, utilizing vertical space for storage. “This felt a bit like magic,” she remarked, noting that it provided much-needed cabinetry for the owners, especially during ski season when they frequently entertain family and friends.

Creating Inviting Spaces

In the dining room, Cooney incorporated vintage furniture to foster warmth and eclectic charm. She refurbished an antique farmhouse table and mixed it with natural woven chairs, adding a relaxed vibe to the space. “Mismatched chairs take away the formality,” she explained, enhancing the inviting atmosphere crucial for family gatherings.

The entryway showcases a blend of vintage elements and modern design. Cooney opted to retain the gray flooring from the previous decor but layered it with vintage rugs. She shared her insights on mixing warm and cool tones, suggesting that this contrast adds depth to a home.

In the living room, Cooney designed a cozy reading nook within a bay window, strategically placing vintage chairs upholstered in vibrant fabric. This choice not only adds visual interest but also creates a unique focal point that invites relaxation.

The master bedroom features a custom-designed bed that complements the home’s aesthetic while standing out as a statement piece. Cooney thoughtfully linked its black frame to other elements in the home, such as the kitchen island and butler’s pantry.

The bathrooms were another area where Cooney could express creativity. She selected playful wallpapers, including a grasscloth for the primary bathroom and a whimsical tiger print for the powder room. “The owners were totally game for wallpapers being added and for being a little cheeky with the prints,” she noted, highlighting the homeowners’ enthusiasm for bold design choices.

Through her innovative approach, Jess Cooney has successfully transformed this historic Victorian home into a vibrant and inviting space. By skillfully incorporating color and pattern, she has created an environment that not only reflects the owners’ personalities but also encourages joyful gatherings with family and friends. The use of black accents throughout the house serves to unify the design, creating a bold yet relaxed atmosphere.
