Dalton-Whitfield NAACP Organizes Health Fair for MLK Day

The Dalton-Whitfield NAACP will host its annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Community Health Fair on January 19, 2024. The event will take place at the Mack Gaston Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., offering free health screenings, flu shots, wellness activities, and community resources. This year marks the fair’s third iteration, aiming to honor Dr. King’s enduring legacy through community service.

Chelsea DeWaters, the communications chair for the Dalton-Whitfield NAACP, highlighted the chapter’s commitment to serving the community. She stated, “I think it’s fair to say our chapter is so much about serving the community and providing ways for people to come together and connect with resources.” DeWaters emphasized that while a health fair may not be the first association with Martin Luther King Jr. Day, it aligns with the mission of supporting community needs.

This year’s health fair builds on previous events, expanding its offerings to include a stronger focus on hands-on care and preventative health measures. Free services will encompass blood pressure checks, blood sugar and glucose testing, A1C, PSA, and cholesterol screenings, as well as hearing tests and wellness education. For the first time, attendees will also have access to free flu shots.

“We’ve made it more of a nurturing experience this year,” DeWaters explained. “You can come and get a real check-up for free — blood pressure, A1C, weight checks — and start the year with a better understanding of your health.” Attendees can also participate in fitness activities, receive complimentary massages, and engage in educational sessions, making the event a comprehensive health resource.

Wellness Activities and Community Engagement

The event will include exercise sessions such as Silver Sneakers and chair yoga, starting every 15 minutes at 11:45 a.m.. Additionally, door prizes will be awarded throughout the event, with participants required to be present to win.

DeWaters expressed that the health fair reflects the NAACP’s mission of unity on a day that holds significant meaning. She remarked, “It’s a way to spend this really sacred day together, literally taking care of each other as a community.” The event serves as both a tribute to Dr. King and a practical approach to community care.

The success of the fair is attributed in part to the staff at the Mack Gaston Community Center. DeWaters acknowledged the efforts of Michael Robinson, the center’s new director, and his team for their commitment to ensuring the event runs smoothly. “They’re hosting the fair and making sure everything runs smoothly on their day off,” she noted, emphasizing their dedication to community well-being.

Participating organizations will include various healthcare providers, fitness and wellness groups, housing and insurance advocates, as well as legal services and mental health resources. This collaborative effort aims to provide both educational information and direct services, making it easier for community members to access essential health resources.

The NAACP encourages individuals of all ages to attend the health fair, particularly as many of the services offered are typically challenging to access for free. DeWaters concluded, “It’s not just about honoring Dr. King in words. It’s about honoring that legacy through action.” The health fair thus stands as a testament to the ongoing commitment to community care and support in honor of Dr. King’s vision.
