Community Mourns the Loss of Jim Michels, 76, in West Virginia

James Franklin “Jim” Michels, a beloved figure in the Morgantown community, passed away on December 3, 2025, at the age of 76. Born on September 20, 1949, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, he was known for his kindness and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and community. Jim leaves behind a legacy of compassion, having touched the lives of many throughout his years.

Jim served honorably in the United States Air Force, where he exemplified the values of commitment and service. Following his military career, he dedicated over three decades to the US Postal Service, where his work ethic and personable nature made a lasting impression. He also played an integral role in the family business, Michels Pharmacy, providing not just pharmaceutical services but also a friendly presence to every customer who walked through the doors.

A Life of Love and Family

Jim was married for more than 40 years to his wife, Janice Marie Crawford Michels. Her passing had a profound impact on him, deepening his love and commitment to her memory. For over 14 years after her death, Jim carried her spirit in his heart, looking forward to their eventual reunion. He is survived by their two daughters, Carren McClurg and Sara Knight, both of whom experienced the strong support and love of their father throughout their lives.

His family expanded with the joy of grandchildren, including Kyle, Lydia, Ryan, Evan, Cayla, and Audrey. Jim’s influence on their lives was significant, as he imparted not only his wisdom but also his genuine kindness.

Jim’s warmth extended beyond his immediate family. He was also survived by his brother, Ronald Charles Michels, and his wife, Janet. Throughout his life, Jim faced personal losses, including the passing of both his parents, Charles Franklin Michels and Elizabeth Ann Kellow Michels, as well as his sister Etta Ann Stadler. Despite these challenges, he maintained an open-hearted approach to life, guided by his enduring faith.
