Colorado State University Fires Coach Jay Norvell after Loss

Colorado State University (CSU) has announced the immediate dismissal of head football coach Jay Norvell following a disappointing homecoming loss to the University of Hawaii on October 14, 2023. The Rams fell to Hawaii with a final score of 31-19, marking a challenging season that leaves the team with a 2-5 record. Defensive coordinator Tyson Summers will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Norvell, who joined CSU in August 2021, was brought on board with the hope of revitalizing the football program. His departure comes as a surprise, particularly given the team’s previous success, which included an 8-5 record and a bowl appearance last year. Athletic Director John Weber emphasized the need for a change in leadership to elevate the program’s competitiveness as the university prepares to transition to the Pac-12 Conference next year.

In a press release, Weber praised Norvell’s character and dedication, stating, “Jay is a leader of the highest character who cares deeply about developing his players as athletes, students, and young men.” He acknowledged the difficulty of the decision but stressed the necessity of positioning the program for future success. “While we’ve seen progress, a change in leadership is necessary to achieve the sustained excellence our program requires,” Weber added.

The search for Norvell’s permanent successor will commence immediately, as CSU looks to enhance its football program ahead of its entry into the Pac-12. This transition is expected to bring heightened expectations and competition, making the appointment of a new head coach critical.

As the Rams move forward under Summers, the focus will be on regrouping and finishing the season strong. The program aims to harness its potential and create a winning culture that resonates with the aspirations of its players and fans.
