A bus driver from Newark has received recognition for his significant contributions to promoting mental health awareness among colleagues and the community. Leigh Barker, an employee of Stagecoach East Midlands, has been named “Star of the Month” following nominations from fellow staff members who praised his dedication to mental health initiatives. Barker was awarded a commendation certificate and a £100 Love2Shop voucher for his efforts.
Barker’s commitment to mental health advocacy is particularly tied to the charity Andy’s Man Club, which aims to end the stigma surrounding men’s mental health through peer-to-peer support groups. In early 2025, Stagecoach East Midlands wrapped two buses in Andy’s Man Club branding, further spreading the message that it is #ITSOKAYTOTALK. One nomination highlighted Barker’s relentless efforts: “I would like to nominate Leigh for his ongoing work in raising awareness of mental health for his colleagues, keeping it at the front of everyone’s minds, as well as the wider community.”
Another nominator echoed similar sentiments, stating, “He has done absolutely outstanding work promoting men’s mental health through his work with Andy’s Man Club. Well done, Leigh.” The branding on the buses serves not only as a promotional tool but also as a vital message to encourage open conversations about mental health.
Matt Cranwell, managing director of Stagecoach East Midlands, expressed pride in Barker’s achievements. “I know that he has pushed the subject of mental health extremely hard and that his passion has encouraged others to get involved or seek assistance,” Cranwell stated. He also noted that Barker’s advocacy has fostered a partnership between Stagecoach and Andy’s Man Club, inspiring other Stagecoach operating companies to consider similar collaborations.
The commendation awarded to Barker reflects the core values upheld by Stagecoach, such as “we are stronger together” and “we support communities.” These principles are reflected in Barker’s daily actions and commitment to mental health advocacy.
As organizations increasingly recognize the importance of mental health, initiatives like Barker’s serve as a reminder of the positive impact individuals can have within their communities. By championing open dialogue and support, Barker is helping to create a culture where mental health is prioritized and stigma is diminished.
