On December 9, 2025, the 35th annual Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas Awards took place at the prestigious Winspear Opera House in Dallas. The event drew a large audience, reflecting the community’s ongoing commitment to reproductive health and rights. Co-chairs Pam and John Beckert led the program, which featured a notable conversation with activist and former First Daughter Barbara Bush, moderated by acclaimed journalist Tashara Parker.
Bush, who currently serves as the NBA’s Head of Social Responsibility, shared personal anecdotes that highlighted her experiences growing up in the Bush family. Her remarks combined humor with heartfelt reflections, particularly focusing on her grandmother’s dedication to family and social causes. This blend of personal and public life resonated with attendees, reinforcing the event’s theme of community support.
The ceremony also honored significant contributions to the field of reproductive health. The Gertrude Shelburne Humanitarian Award was awarded to Froswa’ Booker-Drew, Ph.D. for her extensive work advocating for women and communities of color. In her acceptance speech, Booker-Drew emphasized her collaboration with Planned Parenthood on a new initiative aimed at supporting women dealing with perimenopause and menopause. Her advocacy extends throughout North Texas and beyond, reflecting a deep commitment to improving the lives of those she serves.
Another highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Katherine Ripley Print Media Award, which recognized The Dallas Morning News for its investigative series titled “The Standard of Fear.” This impactful series delved into the real-world consequences of restrictive reproductive care in Texas, providing first-person accounts that shed light on the challenges faced by many in the community.
Following the awards ceremony, attendees continued to support the cause by dining at various local restaurants, including Le Bilboquet, Nonna, and Teak Tearoom. These establishments generously donated a portion of their proceeds to Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas, amplifying the event’s impact throughout the city.
The celebration brought together a diverse group of supporters, including community leaders and advocates. Notable attendees included Thana Hickman, Missy Falchi, and Ken Lambrecht, among others. Their presence underscored the collective effort to uphold and promote reproductive health services in the region.
As the Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas Awards concluded, it became evident that the commitment to advocacy and community support continues to thrive, with leaders like Barbara Bush and Froswa’ Booker-Drew paving the way for future initiatives.
