The Cephas House is set to host a reception on Sunday, March 10, 2024, from 15:00 to 17:00, providing an opportunity for the public to meet the artists behind the compelling works featured in their Afrofuturist exhibit. Attendees can engage with creators and explore a unique collection of Afrofuturist literature, clothing, and comics at the nearby Calaboose African American History Museum.
At the reception, guests will have the chance to interact with several talented artists. Among them is Texas State graduate Bob Jones, known for his vibrant “Diversity Mural” located at the intersection of LBJ and MLK streets. His series, titled “Walking in My Shoes,” features small-format paintings that explore themes of identity and experience.
Another artist, Dave McClinton, also a graduate of Texas State, will showcase his striking collage portraits. McClinton employs digital textures and layered photographs to create large-scale images that challenge perceptions and provoke thought. His work reflects a contemporary fusion of traditional and modern artistic techniques.
Yvonne Palkowitsh will present her innovative art that combines staged photography with digital composites. Palkowitsh’s pieces invite viewers into a dynamic interplay between reality and imagination, offering a fresh perspective on Afrofuturism.
New Orleans native Terrence Moline will share his black-and-white photography, which captures the rich culture and mystique of his hometown. Moline’s images convey a deep connection to place, elevating the narrative of the African American experience through visual storytelling.
This reception presents a valuable opportunity for art enthusiasts and community members to discuss the artists’ inspirations and the themes represented in their works. The Afrofuturist exhibition, along with the collection at the Calaboose African American History Museum, will remain on display until April 24, 2024, allowing ample time for visitors to appreciate these creative contributions to contemporary art.
