A study conducted by researchers at Curtin University in Australia examined the gaming habits of over 300 students and discovered that the duration of gameplay significantly affects health outcomes.
Participants in the study were categorized into three groups based on their gaming hours: low gamers (0–5 hours per week), moderate gamers (5–10 hours), and high gamers (more than 10 hours). The findings indicated a clear distinction in health metrics between these groups, particularly with those gaming more than 10 hours per week.
While low and moderate gamers exhibited similar patterns in diet, sleep quality, and body weight, the health indicators for high gamers were concerning. Students who engaged in extensive gaming had poorer diet quality, higher body mass indexes (BMIs), and more significant sleep disruptions. The median BMI for high gamers was recorded at 26.3, indicating a move into the overweight category, compared to healthier averages of 22.2 for low gamers and 22.8 for moderate gamers.
According to lead researcher Mario Siervo, even a single additional hour of gaming each week correlated with a decline in diet quality. This conclusion held true even when considering factors such as stress, exercise, and other lifestyle choices. The impact on sleep was particularly pronounced; students dedicating over 10 hours to gaming reported significantly poorer sleep quality compared to their peers.
