SDPA 2025 Conference: Sarah Vicari Discusses Mentorship and Innovation

The 2025 Society of Dermatology Physician Associates (SDPA) Fall Conference in San Antonio, Texas, served as a platform for critical discussions around mentorship and innovative practices in dermatology. During the event, Sarah Vicari, MMS, PA-C, the current president of SDPA, engaged in an insightful interview with HCPLive, highlighting the conference’s significance and various notable sessions.

Vicari, who will serve as president until July 2026, expressed her commitment to enhancing the visibility of the Dermatology Physician Assistant Foundation (DPAF). “Many people are unaware of its existence, which is disheartening because that’s where I began my leadership journey,” she stated. Vicari emphasized the foundation’s mission of community outreach and its role in funding research initiatives for physician associates (PAs), which can be published in the SDPA’s journal, The Journal of Dermatology for PAs (JDPA).

Mentorship was a focal point of Vicari’s discussion, particularly with the launch of the new program, RISE Derm PA, which stands for Reach, Inspire, Support, and Empower. “It is our mentorship program,” Vicari elaborated. “It functions similarly to a matchmaking service, where PAs can enter their preferences and be paired with mentors who can guide them.” This initiative aims to foster professional development and support collaboration among PAs.

In her interview, Vicari also highlighted several sessions she found particularly exciting at the conference. She mentioned a presentation by Dr. Gabriela Maloney focusing on JAK inhibitors used off-label. “Dr. Maloney once visited my office and discussed this topic, leading me to suggest she deliver a lecture,” Vicari recalled. “Now, she is here sharing her insights.”

The SDPA 2025 Fall Conference not only showcases advancements in dermatology but also provides an invaluable opportunity for professional networking and education. As the conference continues, attendees can expect to explore various topics relevant to their practice, reinforcing the importance of mentorship and ongoing learning in the field.
