Local Business Owner Raises Environmental Concerns Over Data Center

LeeAnn Mullen, owner of the Tahoe Pines Wellness Center, LLC, has raised significant concerns regarding the environmental and health impacts of a proposed data center near her property in Basom, New York. The Genesee County Economic Development Center (GCEDC) approved plans for a data center in March 2025, but has since revoked these approvals, citing that the developer, Stream Data Center, intends to submit a proposal for a larger facility on the same site.

Mullen has lived in Basom for several years and purchased her property online in 2009. The natural beauty of the surrounding area, including the Iroquois Wildlife Refuge and the lush pine trees, played a crucial role in her decision to establish a wellness center there. She emphasized that her intention was to create a tranquil environment for her clients, which she believes may be jeopardized by the development of a large-scale data center.

In her letter, Mullen detailed her professional background, noting her 35 years of experience in medical management and wellness. She expressed her deep commitment to the community and the environment, stating, “The aesthetic beauty and natural surroundings are essential for the health and wellness services I provide.”

Mullen’s concerns reflect broader apprehensions within the community about the potential impacts of data centers, which are known for their substantial energy consumption and environmental footprint. The proposed project has ignited a dialogue among residents about the balance between economic development and environmental preservation.

As the GCEDC navigates the complexities of this situation, Mullen hopes her voice will contribute to a more informed discussion regarding the environmental implications of the proposed data center. She advocates for transparency in the decision-making process and urges local authorities to consider the long-term effects on the community’s well-being.

The future of the STAMP site remains uncertain as the community awaits further proposals from Stream Data Center. Mullen remains vigilant, committed to protecting the natural environment that drew her to Basom. Her letter serves as a reminder of the importance of community engagement in local development initiatives, particularly when those initiatives could significantly alter the landscape and quality of life for residents.
