Burnley’s Loneliness UK Turns to TikTok to Combat Isolation

Loneliness UK, a community initiative based in Burnley, has adopted TikTok as part of its strategy to address health anxiety and social isolation. Founded by local resident Michael Helps, the organization initially focused on a letter-writing service to connect people, particularly the elderly, with others who may feel isolated. Now, three years later, Helps aims to expand his outreach by engaging with a younger audience on social media.

Embracing Modern Communication

Michael Helps established Loneliness UK to tackle the pervasive issue of loneliness, which he views as a significant health concern. In his words, “My journey with Loneliness UK has been challenging with many ups and downs but I still strive to make Loneliness UK a household name to support those in time of need.” The organization encourages anyone struggling with loneliness to share their experiences through letters, either online or via traditional mail.

While Helps values the personal touch of letter writing, he recognizes the importance of adapting to modern communication styles. Recently, he took to TikTok, a platform with millions of users worldwide, to share his experiences and insights on loneliness and loss. One of his videos has garnered over 24,000 views and sparked conversations with 133 comments from viewers across the UK. “When traveling across the UK, I have made a commitment to upload a video sharing different topics from losing a loved one to health anxiety,” he explained. This approach aims to reach those who may be seeking someone to talk to.

Funding the Mission

Currently, all expenses for Loneliness UK are covered by Helps personally. To sustain the free service, he has launched a GoFundMe page to support its operations. “Loneliness UK will never become a service that people who are suffering with loneliness will have to pay for,” he emphasized. The organization aims to remain accessible to all, irrespective of age. “All you need is a pen, paper, envelope, and stamp,” he added.

Recognized as a public health concern comparable to obesity or smoking, loneliness poses significant risks to both physical and mental well-being, particularly among younger populations. Through initiatives like TikTok engagement and the ongoing letter-writing campaign, Loneliness UK strives to connect individuals in need of support.
