The life and tragic death of Tejano music icon Selena Quintanilla-Pérez is examined in a new Netflix documentary titled Selena y Los Dinos: A Family Legacy. The documentary, produced by her husband Chris Pérez and sister Suzette Quintanilla, coincides with the release of details from her autopsy report, which has remained sealed for nearly three decades.
On March 31, 1995, the 23-year-old star was fatally shot by Yolanda Saldivar, the former president of her fan club. Following her death, an autopsy was conducted just three hours later, reflecting the significant public interest surrounding the case. The findings confirmed that Selena succumbed to a gunshot wound inflicted on her lower right shoulder.
According to the autopsy report obtained by Us Weekly, coroner Lloyd White detailed that her death resulted from “exsanguinating internal and external hemorrhage,” a condition caused by a perforating gunshot wound to the thorax. The report indicated that the bullet entered her back, traversed her ribs, and impacted the upper lobe of her lungs before exiting her body. The injury to her subclavian artery was identified as a critical factor in her rapid demise.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Saldivar claimed that the gunshot was accidental and pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder. Nevertheless, she was convicted in October 1995 and received a life sentence with the possibility of parole. This year, her request for parole was denied, and she will not be eligible to apply again until 2030.
