re:Naissance to Showcase ‘Inferno: A Hip Hop Opera’ at IndieFest 2025

re:Naissance has announced the presentation of “Inferno: A Hip Hop Opera,” created by Omari Newton and Amy Lee Lavoie, as part of its 2025 IndieFest. This innovative production will be staged on November 28 and 29, 2025, during the festival which runs from November 20 to 29 in Vancouver. “Inferno” aligns with this year’s theme, “Colliding Art Forms,” by reimagining Dante Alighieri’s classic work through a modern lens.

“Inferno: A Hip Hop Opera” centers on the resilience of artistic communities whose creative works are often appropriated. The narrative unfolds in a contemporary setting, where Hell is conceived as a Spotify-like headquarters. The protagonists, Vie, a music producer, and Mo, an artist turned security guard, embark on a quest to reclaim their rights to their artistic contributions. The opera combines the emotional depth of traditional opera with the dynamic, text-driven aesthetics of hip-hop, promising a unique auditory experience.

Debi Wong, founding artistic director of re:Naissance, emphasized the festival’s mission to foster collaboration within artistic communities. In a press release, she stated, “In Vancouver, we often see artistic communities working in silos. Our festival is designed to disrupt that.” Wong believes that the future of performing arts lies in such collaborations, which respond to the rapidly changing cultural landscape.

By integrating emerging technologies and immersive practices, re:Naissance aims to expand the creative toolkit available to artists and build connections between diverse communities. This approach not only enriches the festival experience but also promotes dialogue and understanding among different artistic disciplines.

The music from “Inferno” will be made available for streaming after the festival, allowing audiences to engage with the production beyond its live performances. This move highlights the evolving nature of how art is consumed and shared in the digital age.

The 2025 IndieFest is set to be a landmark event, showcasing a range of performances that challenge traditional boundaries. With productions like “Inferno: A Hip Hop Opera,” re:Naissance is paving the way for new narratives and artistic expressions that resonate with contemporary audiences.

As the festival approaches, anticipation is building for what promises to be a transformative experience for both artists and attendees alike.
