New Arcade The Dragon’s Dojo Offers Unique Rhythm Gaming Hub

BURLINGTON, Vermont – A new arcade called The Dragon’s Dojo has opened its doors under scaffolding on College Street, providing a fresh social space for Vermonters. The establishment focuses on rhythm games, offering an alternative to traditional venues such as bars and gyms, and aims to foster a sense of community among its patrons.

Owner Jaret Williams, 28, launched The Dragon’s Dojo in late October 2023 after receiving an inheritance. Originally from New Jersey, Williams graduated from the University of Vermont in 2021, majoring in art history and classical civilization. Inspired by the welcoming atmosphere of Game Underground in Waltham, Massachusetts, Williams hopes to replicate that inclusive environment in Burlington.

“This place is about more than just games; it’s about bringing people together,” said Williams. The arcade caters to a diverse clientele, including members of the gaming and queer communities. Customer Sophie Carbin discovered The Dragon’s Dojo through friends and appreciates its non-drinking focus. “I think it’s nice that it also brings together people of shared interests. People are here for the games and not just kind of as a night out with friends,” Carbin expressed.

Rhythm Games Blend Socializing and Fitness

Rhythm games, which combine elements of music and movement, have a rich history that dates back to 1987, with Family Trainer: Aerobics Studio recognized by Guinness World Records as the first recorded example. Williams noted that while many people are familiar with titles like Guitar Hero or Dance Dance Revolution, there is a vast array of rhythm games waiting to be explored.

The most popular game at The Dragon’s Dojo is Wacca, which features a circular neon layout and a 360-degree touch screen. Williams described Wacca as “intuitive” and attributed its popularity to its engaging gameplay.

Vermont currently has 13 businesses classified within the Arcade, Food & Entertainment Complexes Industry, according to an analysis by IBISWorld. However, none focus exclusively on rhythm games, making The Dragon’s Dojo a distinctive destination for enthusiasts. “There’s nowhere else to play most of these games for hundreds of miles,” Williams stated.

A Space for Connection

The Dragon’s Dojo not only serves as a gaming venue but also as a hub for social interaction. Williams emphasized the importance of providing gamers with an opportunity to meet face-to-face. “It’s neat to have more options for people, rather than like, ‘You like games? Stay at home.’ No, there’s options,” they said.

As the arcade continues to grow, Williams aims to maintain the welcoming spirit that inspired its creation. The Dragon’s Dojo is not just about gaming; it represents a community where individuals can share their passion, meet new friends, and enjoy a unique blend of rhythm and camaraderie in Burlington.
