Lakewood Native Organizes Eric Carmen Tribute Show on Nov. 25

On November 25, 2023, the Lakewood Civic Auditorium in Ohio will host “EC50: A Celebration of Eric Carmen’s Musical Legacy,” a tribute show dedicated to the late musician. Organized by Stephen Knill, a local native and former bassist for Carmen, the event promises to be a memorable homage to the artist’s influential career.

Knill, who graduated from Lakewood High School in 1972, described the event as a significant personal milestone. “This is incredibly special and totally full circle,” he remarked during a call from his home in North Carolina. “I actually thought about other venues but my sister suggested, ‘Why aren’t you doing it at your alma mater?’ I thought, my God, yes.” He emphasized the importance of giving back to the community where he grew up.

A Star-Studded Tribute

The tribute will feature members of Carmen’s solo-era band, alongside special guest vocalists and the Lakewood Project, a student rock orchestra. The ensemble, comprising 47 student musicians and 11 alumni from Lakewood High School Orchestra, will perform some of Carmen’s biggest hits, including “All by Myself,” “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again,” and “Hungry Eyes.”

“We decided this needed to be the show that Eric would do in 2025 if he were here and had pretty limitless resources,” Knill stated. He envisions a full orchestra performing in the auditorium, which seats 1,800 people, providing an ideal setting for this grand celebration.

Rehearsals with the Lakewood Project have exceeded Knill’s expectations. “The band was a bit skeptical until they heard the kids play,” he shared with a laugh. “We were like, ‘Oh my God, they’re better than us.’ So it’s a win all the way across the board.” The Lakewood Project combines electric and acoustic strings with electric guitars, keyboards, and drums, creating a unique blend of rock and classical music.

Community Impact and Educational Significance

Director Elizabeth A. Hankins, who leads the Lakewood Project and serves as the district orchestra director, praised the students’ adaptability and confidence. “The students possess a confidence that enables them to step into a professional setting and excel,” Hankins explained. “Their ability to mix rock and classical makes them the perfect ensemble to play with The Eric Carmen Band and special guests.”

For Hankins, the tribute show represents a culmination of her 36 years of teaching. “To see this vision come to life feels like the culmination of my career—a celebration of music, community, and the countless students who have made this journey so meaningful,” she added.

The upcoming tribute is not just a musical event; it symbolizes a deep connection to the community and a tribute to a beloved artist. As the date approaches, excitement builds for what promises to be a heartfelt celebration of Eric Carmen‘s musical legacy.
