Investigative Horror Game “The Killing Stone” Launches February 18

The upcoming release of the investigative deckbuilding horror game, The Killing Stone, is set for February 18, 2024, marking an exciting addition to the genre. Developed by the team at Question, known for their previous work on the BioShock series, this title has already garnered attention following the release of its demo during Gamescom.

Set in the 17th century, players assume the role of the Maven, who is tasked with unraveling the mystery surrounding the death of Mariken Svangard. As the investigation deepens, the Maven uncovers a generational curse afflicting Svangard’s family. To break the cycle of damnation, the Maven must engage in card battles against a host of demons, including the enigmatic fiend known as One Eye. The stakes are high, as not only does the Maven risk their own soul, but also those of Svangard’s family.

The gameplay unfolds through strategic card battles on the Fanghelia, or the titular Killing Stone. Players will utilize a variety of figurines, spells, and incantations, each affecting the outcome of the battle. The objective is to reduce the opponent’s eye health to zero, frequently necessitating the removal of minions that hinder progress. A unique Reserve system allows players to stack units and enhance incantations for future turns, adding a layer of strategy to this turn-based experience.

While The Killing Stone is not officially classified as a roguelike, it incorporates elements typical of the genre. Players will collect special boons between battles, providing a sense of progression. Additional gameplay mechanics, such as the Bargaining system, will enable players to negotiate for permanent stat adjustments, enriching the overall experience.

Voice acting in the game features talents such as Emma Gregory from Baldur’s Gate 3 as the Maven and Liam O’Brien from Critical Role as One Eye. Players can choose between modern prose and authentic 17th-century English, both delivered by the acclaimed voice actors, enhancing the immersive quality of the storytelling.

As the third title from Question, led by Jordan Thomas and Stephen Alexander, The Killing Stone promises to challenge players’ strategic thinking and card-battling abilities. For those eager to experience the game before its official launch, a free demo is available on Steam.

With its engaging mechanics and rich narrative, The Killing Stone is poised to captivate players when it debuts on PC in February.
