Community Mourns Loss of Brayden Smith, Promising Engineer

Brayden Michael Smith, a talented 21-year-old engineer, passed away on November 24, 2025, in Morgantown, West Virginia. Born on August 13, 2004, in Cary, North Carolina, he was the son of Dr. Jeffrey and Heather Ring Smith. Smith’s untimely death has left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the community.

A proud graduate of Morgantown High School, Brayden achieved remarkable academic success. He graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2025 from West Virginia University, earning a dual degree in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. His dedication to education extended beyond his studies; he actively contributed as a teacher and tutor at the Statler College of Engineering’s Engineering Learning Center.

Brayden was a vibrant member of the university community, participating in the F1 Formula Club, where he served as the driver interface leader for the Formula SAE team. His passion for engineering was matched only by his love for sports and hobbies. He frequently attended Pittsburgh Steeler games with his father, enjoyed riding motorcycles, and had a keen interest in drawing, anime, computers, and building with Legos. His enthusiasm for his Subaru WRX STI was well-known among friends.

Brayden was renowned for his friendly demeanor and sharp wit. He formed lasting friendships and was cherished by all who knew him. His family and friends recall him as someone who generously shared his time and talents with others, leaving a legacy of kindness and humor.

In addition to his parents, Brayden is survived by his brothers, Sgt. Dakota Paul Smith and his girlfriend Emily Gyurman, and Barrett Thomas Smith. He is also mourned by his grandmothers, Susan Vaughan and Ruth Smith; uncle, Michael Ring; aunt, Kelly Saines and her husband Gus; and several cousins. Brayden’s beloved pug, Dexter, is also part of his family legacy. He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Dr. Thomas Ring and Donald P. Smith.

Friends and family are invited to pay their respects at Hastings Funeral Home, located at 153 Spruce Street, Morgantown, on December 4, 2025, from 1 p.m. until the funeral service begins at 4 p.m. Father Brian Crenwelge will officiate the service.
