Community Mourns Delores K. Metcalf Morrell, Beloved Educator

Delores K. Metcalf Morrell, affectionately known as “Dee,” passed away on December 14, 2025, at the age of 82. A cherished member of her community and a dedicated educator, Dee’s departure leaves a profound impact on those who knew her. Born on August 3, 1943, in Vallejo, California, she was the daughter of Irene and Charles Dickens. Following her parents’ separation when she was three, her mother remarried Claude Metcalf, who played a significant role in Dee’s upbringing.

A Life Dedicated to Education and Community

Dee’s journey began in Arkansas, where her family operated a chicken ranch after moving from California. She graduated from Lamar High School in 1961 and went on to earn her degree from the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville, Arkansas, in 1965. Shortly thereafter, she began her teaching career as an English teacher at Booneville High School, where she worked for three years before joining Red Bluff Union High School in 1968. Over the next 12 years, she taught English and served as the yearbook advisor.

Dee was not only committed to her students; she also participated in various vocal groups and choirs, reflecting her passion for the arts. Her involvement in the Fitzhugh Society, a local literary group established in the 1880s, further enriched her life and fostered connections within her community.

Overcoming Adversity and Inspiring Others

In June 1990, Dee faced a life-changing challenge when she was involved in a serious car accident caused by a drunk driver, leading to significant injuries. After spending six weeks in intensive care and ten weeks in the hospital, she made a remarkable recovery, although the injuries to her leg limited her ability to teach in a traditional classroom. Embracing this new reality, she became the Director of the Independent Study Program at Red Bluff Union High School, a position she held until her retirement in 2000. In recognition of her outstanding work, she was named the California Independent Study Teacher of the Year in 1998.

Following her retirement, Dee continued to support education by establishing an Independent Study Program for the Yuba City Charter School, where she worked part-time until 2011. Her commitment to education and her students remained unwavering throughout her life.

Dee’s personal life was equally fulfilling. She married R. Barry Morrell on June 27, 1987, forming a partnership that lasted 38 years. Their daughter, Megan Rene’ Lush, and granddaughter, Morgan Ashley Lush, brought immense joy to her life. Dee and Barry enjoyed traveling extensively, exploring both domestic and international destinations, including memorable trips across the United States in their trailer.

Despite her active lifestyle, the long-term effects of her accident resurfaced in recent years, leading to cognitive decline and health challenges. After two serious falls in 2025 that resulted in a broken pelvis and hip, Dee and Barry relocated to Arizona to be closer to family. She passed peacefully in Anthem, Arizona, surrounded by loved ones.

Dee is survived by her husband, R. Barry Morrell; her daughter, Megan Rene’ Lush; and granddaughter, Morgan Ashley Lush. She also leaves behind her brother, Richard Metcalf, and his wife Sharon, along with a sister-in-law, Lynn Swendiman, and numerous nieces and nephews. Many dear friends, including Kate Whitmore, Sue Williams, and the remaining “Amigos,” Jean Hanson and Nancy Hickson, will also remember her fondly.

A Celebration of Life is scheduled for March 15, 2026, at the Red Bluff Community Center from 11:00 a.m. to approximately 1:00 p.m. The community is invited to honor the legacy of a beloved educator and friend.
