Samsung and Apple Tie in Smartphone Production, Apple Surprises

The latest figures from TrendForce reveal that Samsung and Apple have reached a tie in smartphone production for the year 2023. Both tech giants produced approximately 239.8 million smartphones, contributing to a total of 1.25 billion smartphones shipped globally. Apple’s production saw a notable increase of 9%, while Samsung’s rose by 11%. The only exception among Chinese brands was Honor, which reported a 16% increase, producing 70.5 million smartphones.

Surprisingly, Apple’s strong performance occurred without the anticipated release of an AI-enhanced version of its iOS software, which has now been pushed to 2026. Instead, the company is expected to unveil an upgraded version of Siri, powered by Google’s Gemini, later this year. According to CNBC, this collaboration signifies Apple’s commitment to enhancing its virtual assistant’s capabilities.

The financial impact of the iPhone’s success is noteworthy. In its latest earnings report, Apple announced that iPhone revenue soared to $85.3 billion, up from $69.1 billion during the same period last year. This revenue accounted for approximately 59% of Apple’s total revenue of $143.6 billion for the quarter.
