A new café has officially opened in Brunswick, Maine, providing a fresh breakfast and lunch destination. Baked on Maine, created by the team behind two well-known midcoast bakeries, debuted on January 2, 2024, following a brief soft opening earlier in the week. Located in the former premises of The Great Impasta on Maine Street, this establishment aims to fill a gap in the local dining scene.
The café’s menu features a variety of breakfast options and lunch sandwiches, alongside an array of sweet and savory dishes. Notably, the baked goods come from Wildflours Gluten-Free Bakery in Brunswick and Mae’s Cafe & Bakery in Bath. Manager Ryan Ballard emphasized the café’s unique offerings, stating, “What’s not already here is a breakfast place on Maine Street in Brunswick.”
Baked on Maine is set apart by its inclusion of smoked meats such as brisket and pulled pork, used in both breakfast and lunch sandwiches. This diverse menu reflects the café’s intention to cater to a wider audience. Ballard noted that while Wildflours operates as a 100% gluten-free bakery, Baked on Maine provides options for both gluten-free and traditional diets.
The café is owned by Ned Horton, a real estate investor from Nashville with ties to Brunswick. Horton and his Maine team were eager to occupy the space as soon as The Great Impasta became available. “We were trying to decide if we were going to move Wildflours over here, or if we were going to do something new and feature Wildflours and Mae’s,” Ballard explained. Ultimately, they prioritized a broader offering to avoid limiting the customer base.
In its initial days, Baked on Maine has seen a positive reception from the community. The café is currently open from Friday to Monday, from 08:00 to 14:00, at 42 Maine St..
This development marks a significant addition to the Brunswick area, as locals and visitors alike can now enjoy a distinctive breakfast experience. For more information, readers can reach out to Katie Langley at [email protected].
