Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan emphasized the necessity of international cooperation for Syria’s recovery as efforts to rebuild the war-torn nation gradually commence. Speaking to a local television channel on Saturday, Fidan highlighted the immense scale of destruction wrought by years of conflict, even as investments begin to take shape.
Fidan noted that collaboration among regional nations and partnerships with European and United States entities are essential for laying the groundwork for reconstruction. “Investments in Syria are gradually starting to take shape, but the scale of destruction is enormous,” he said. He pointed out the importance of infrastructure for returning citizens, stressing that they require access to basic services to rebuild their lives.
In response to criticism from European and US officials regarding the current administration’s control over Syria, Fidan asserted that Türkiye believes a significant level of control has been established, although challenges remain in certain areas. He specifically referenced regions dominated by the PKK/YPG-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), citing the need for resolution of outstanding issues within the framework of the March 10 Agreement. This agreement aims to integrate the SDF into state institutions to prevent further conflict.
Key Areas of Concern
Fidan also identified southern Syria as a critical area of concern, describing it as potentially the “biggest risk area” at present. He stated that while the situation is currently manageable, the involvement of Israel heightens risks and necessitates vigilant monitoring. Violence and military incursions by Israeli forces have escalated since the overthrow of Bashar Assad last December.
Moreover, Fidan underscored Türkiye’s commitment to ongoing projects in Syria, pointing to the strong geographic and economic ties between the two nations. “There is significant potential in terms of trade, transportation, and connectivity. But first, stability needs to be restored within the country,” he remarked.
As reconstruction efforts unfold, the Turkish government is poised to play a vital role in facilitating investments and fostering collaboration with international partners. The path ahead remains fraught with challenges, but the commitment to rebuilding Syria is evident among regional stakeholders.
