A well-known late-night venue in Fresno, California, has undergone a transformation with the reopening of Hookah Bal, formerly known as Kan Zaman Lounge. This change in ownership and branding aims to attract both returning customers and new patrons looking for a relaxed atmosphere to unwind.
The new owner, Prince Raj, has modernized the lounge, creating a welcoming environment that includes updated decor and music. Located at the corner of Blackstone Avenue and Sierra Avenue, Hookah Bal is open from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. Monday through Thursday, and until 2:00 a.m. on weekends, reflecting Raj’s vision to extend the lounge’s hours and appeal to a broader audience.
In a recent statement, Raj expressed his desire to create a space where guests can unwind after various activities, stating, “We welcome regulars and first-time patrons alike. We’re transforming our lounge with relaxed music, a welcoming vibe, and later hours.” He purchased the business from longtime operator David Basha, who continues to manage the adjacent Kan Zaman Grill. While the two venues were once part of a single brand, they now function independently. Raj credited Basha’s support during the transition as essential to the rebranding process.
Raj shared that his enthusiasm for hookah made the decision to acquire the lounge an appealing opportunity. After discovering the listing online, he met Basha in early October 2023, and within a month, the sale was finalized. “Taking the business over has been pretty easy,” he noted, adding that Basha’s guidance has been invaluable.
Modernizing the Hookah Experience
Since reopening, Raj has focused on upgrading the lounge’s ambiance. New furniture and seasonal decorations are part of his strategy to attract a younger demographic to the venue. He is also experimenting with innovative flavor options and fruit bowl hookahs, which he believes enhance the traditional hookah experience. “I would say I deliver more good service to modern people, to the younger people, because I’m younger myself,” Raj explained. He aims to offer a wider selection of flavors to appeal to this demographic.
Despite the restrictions imposed by Proposition 31, which banned flavored tobacco products in California, Raj noted that hookah establishments can still sell flavored products if they restrict entry to patrons over 21. This legal distinction allows Hookah Bal to maintain a diverse menu while promoting a safe environment.
Raj envisions Hookah Bal as an integral part of Fresno’s evolving late-night culture. The lounge does not serve alcoholic beverages, positioning it as a serene option for those looking to relax after an evening out. “Our goal is to make this lounge a part of Fresno’s cultural fabric,” he said. “Whether you’re into hookah, vaping, smoking, or just looking for a chill spot to connect with friends, we invite you to experience a comfortable, social place where you can share moments experiencing something new together.”
As Hookah Bal settles into its new identity, the focus remains on fostering community connections and creating a unique late-night atmosphere in Fresno.
