New Season Sparks Hope for Fighting Scots Basketball Team

The Scotland County Fighting Scots are poised for a transformative basketball season under the leadership of new head coach Jarvis Cobb. With the season opener scheduled for December 2, 2023, against St. Paul’s, Cobb aims to revitalize a program that has struggled with a record of 15-34 over the past two years.

Cobb brings a philosophy centered on a tough, disciplined, and fast-paced style of play. He is determined to instill a competitive spirit in his team, emphasizing the need to make the opposition uncomfortable. “This will be their first time with me as head coach, and we’re going to be athletic, fast and make the opposing team uncomfortable,” Cobb stated. His vision includes a strong emphasis on scoring in transition and executing plays effectively.

The departure of standout players such as Dajuan Gibson, Quatavius Everette, and Jerrison Dixon presents both a challenge and an opportunity. The team now turns to a new core of players including Maddox McNickle, Nasiah McLean, Nazire Campbell, Carter Williams, Tomek McFadden, and Javeer Pasley. These athletes are now stepping up to redefine the team’s identity on the court.

“Once we get everybody settled in, we’re going to be scary,” said sophomore guard McNickle, highlighting the team’s high expectations for the season. “We expect to win the conference with the new brand of basketball we’re implementing. It is a brotherhood, which is something you love to not only hear but also to be a part of.”

Cobb’s coaching philosophy revolves around resilience and teamwork. He articulated his mantra: “Our phrase is ‘do what we do,’ which means fighting, being resilient, and playing until that buzzer sounds. Every team I have coached has been resilient, no matter what happens around us. Whenever we meet adversity, we will pick each other up.”

The upcoming season not only signals a fresh start for the Fighting Scots but also a chance to foster a strong team dynamic. Cobb’s commitment to building a cohesive unit could prove vital in turning around the team’s performance.

As the Fighting Scots prepare to take the court against St. Paul’s, anticipation builds within the community. The game is set for 19:30 local time at home, offering fans their first glimpse of the new era in Scotland County basketball.
