In a gripping showdown at the 3C2A NorCal Regional playoffs, the No. 8 seed Cabrillo College women’s volleyball team edged out No. 9 Cosumnes River College in a thrilling five-set match on March 5, 2024. The final scores of 20-25, 29-27, 25-21, 25-27, and 15-13 reflect the intensity of this do-or-die encounter, showcasing the determination of both teams.
Cabrillo’s coach, Branden Torado, commended his players for their resilience and teamwork. “I told the team I wasn’t ready to stop coaching them—not tonight, not this season,” he stated. “Our commitment to defense and playing for each other was crucial in navigating the chaos of a match like this. That identity is why we’re still standing.”
The Seahawks, now boasting a record of 22-5, will face the top-seeded San Joaquin Delta College, which holds a remarkable record of 28-1, in the upcoming match scheduled for Saturday. San Joaquin Delta advanced by defeating No. 16 Reedley in straight sets.
Cabrillo’s defensive efforts were pivotal in their victory, particularly the performance of Gwen Grigsby, an All-Coast Conference North Division first-team libero, who recorded an impressive 38 digs. Torado noted a shift in energy during the decisive fifth set, as his players moved from a defensive mindset to an aggressive approach. “We started attacking the ball and being aggressive on the court,” he said.
The fifth set saw a series of critical plays, including a powerful attack from Natalia Cash that gave Cabrillo an 11-10 lead. Jordan Simpkins and Sophie Hall followed with key points, and Simpkins ultimately secured the match with a decisive kill.
Freshman outside hitter Alyssa Courchene, recognized as a first-team all-conference player, significantly contributed with 14 kills, four service aces, and 23 digs. Simpkins added 13 kills, while Cash and fellow middle hitter Laysha Vargas contributed 11 and 10 kills, respectively.
Setting the pace for the team was sophomore setter Jaycee Lee, who previously played for Cosumnes River. Lee demonstrated exceptional composure, finishing the match with 56 assists and 31 digs.
The atmosphere in Aptos was electric, with fans erupting in cheers as the Seahawks celebrated their hard-fought victory. This win not only advances Cabrillo in the playoffs but also solidifies their reputation as a determined and cohesive unit, ready to take on the challenges ahead in the pursuit of a championship.
