UPDATE: An alarming assault occurred inside Macy’s Herald Square in New York City on September 27, 2023, leaving a family shaken just days before the busy holiday shopping season. 71-year-old Mustafa Sevindik was violently attacked while shopping with his family, prompting urgent concerns about safety in the bustling department store.
According to police reports, a woman, later identified as Donna Francis, 65, approached Sevindik from behind and struck him multiple times with what is believed to be a cell phone. The incident unfolded on the ninth floor, where the family was shopping for furniture. Witnessing the assault, Sevindik’s son, Emre Sevindik, described the scene as “very scary,” stating, “First reaction was to make sure he was OK.”
Mustafa Sevindik was immediately taken to a local hospital for treatment of deep internal bruising. Fortunately, he survived the attack without more severe injuries. Police confirmed that Francis was arrested on Thursday and charged with assault.
Macy’s issued a statement following the incident, emphasizing their commitment to customer safety: “At Macy’s, the safety of our customers and colleagues is always our top priority. All incidents that put that at risk are taken seriously.” The store has deferred further inquiries to local authorities.
Despite the trauma, Mustafa Sevindik remains grateful that the situation was not worse, expressing, “Thank God no knife, no gun. I say thank God.” However, the emotional toll is evident. He shared his fears for his family, stating, “Now, I’m scared. For what? For my family, for everyone.” His wife, Hulya Sevindik, echoed his concerns, saying, “I’m nervous. Now, I don’t want to go out.”
The Midtown South Precinct has reported a slight uptick in felony assaults over the past year, with misdemeanor assaults rising by more than 8%. This disturbing trend raises questions about safety in one of New York City’s most iconic shopping districts.
As the holiday season approaches, the Sevindik family tries to maintain their festive spirit, but the recent attack has left them reevaluating their perceptions of safety in the city they love. Emre Sevindik remarked, “I can be as hopeful as I can. I don’t know if I’m optimistic.”
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as officials continue to investigate the incident and its implications for public safety in New York City.
