Katie Farmer, the president and CEO of BNSF Railway, has been named the Distinguished Citizen for 2025 by the Longhorn Council of Scouting America. This accolade marks a significant recognition for Farmer, who is notably the first woman to lead a Class I railroad. The Longhorn Council has celebrated outstanding leaders and organizations for over three decades, acknowledging their impact on the community.
Farmer expressed her gratitude for the honor, highlighting the shared values between BNSF and Scouting America. “I’m humbled and honored for BNSF to be recognized by the Longhorn Council of the Boy Scouts of America, because the values of scouting are the same values that are important to all of us at BNSF — serving others while leading with responsibility, character, and integrity,” she stated.
Commitment to Community and Values
In her remarks, Farmer emphasized the role of BNSF in connecting communities and strengthening local economies. “At BNSF, we don’t just move freight — we connect people, support local economies and help communities thrive,” she said. She believes that investing in communities is crucial for the success of future generations.
Farmer has witnessed firsthand how strong values and a commitment to service can create lasting impacts. Her professional journey began in 1992 as a management trainee with Burlington Northern, BNSF’s predecessor. Over the past 28 years, she has held various positions, culminating in her appointment as president and CEO in 2021.
With a background in business administration from Texas Christian University (TCU) and an MBA from the Neeley School of Business, Farmer brings a wealth of knowledge to her leadership role. Under her guidance, BNSF has continued to thrive as one of North America’s leading freight transportation companies, operating approximately 32,500 route miles across 28 states and three Canadian provinces.
A Testament to Leadership
Sanjay Chandra, managing partner at Trinity Investors and the chair of the event for 2025, praised Farmer for her embodiment of the scouting organization’s values through her service and leadership. “Her dedication not only creates opportunities for others but also inspires future generations to embrace the values of character, integrity, and responsibility,” he remarked.
The Longhorn Council’s recognition of Farmer underscores the importance of leadership that aligns with community values. As BNSF continues to play a vital role in the transportation landscape, Farmer’s appointment as Distinguished Citizen serves as a reminder of the impact that committed leaders can have on their communities and industries alike.
As BNSF Railway moves forward under Farmer’s leadership, her focus on community and service remains at the forefront, showcasing the railroad’s commitment to not only freight transport but also the well-being of the communities it serves.
