UPDATE: Construction has officially begun on the final mixed-use tower at the historic Domino Sugar site in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. This marks a significant milestone in a 12-year redevelopment project, with the new 545-unit building set to rise at Domino Site B, positioned between 1 South First and the iconic Domino Sugar Refinery.
The City Council approved a rezoning for the site just last month, allowing Two Trees Management to adjust its original plans from 2014. The revised design eliminates the proposed skybridge and incorporates a more modern, wavy facade. Each unit will feature a balcony, enhancing the living experience for future residents.
This project is not just about new construction; it promises to deliver over 1,200 housing units, with 315 designated as affordable. An additional 105 affordable units will be created offsite, expanding housing options for the community.
Lincoln Restler, the local Council Member, expressed strong support for the modifications, stating they will generate more affordable housing without increasing the building’s size. “Two Trees proposed some thoughtful modifications that will benefit the community,” he said.
As part of the agreement, Two Trees will extend the protected bike lane along Kent Avenue and improve public spaces, including renovations to the schoolyard at nearby J.H.S. 126. This collaborative effort aims to integrate the development into the surrounding neighborhood and enhance community living.
While the project received widespread community support, Restler voiced frustration over the School Construction Authority’s recent decision to not include a new elementary school in the development. This shift has left some local leaders concerned about future educational resources.
Dave Lombino, spokesperson for Two Trees, highlighted the project’s significance, stating, “We’re looking at 13 years of enormous effort.” He emphasized the importance of Domino Park, which has become a beloved community space, showcasing the dedication to creating a vibrant neighborhood.
The anticipated completion date for Domino Site B is approximately three years away, marking the end of a long journey for the Domino Sugar redevelopment. The community is eager to see how this final phase will shape the area and provide much-needed housing.
As the construction progresses, all eyes will be on Two Trees and their commitment to delivering a project that serves the community’s needs while also enhancing the Williamsburg waterfront.
