Torlonia Collection Brings Ancient Roman Sculptures to U.S.

The Torlonia Foundation is showcasing its renowned collection of ancient Roman sculptures in the United States for the first time. The exhibition, titled Myth and Marble: Ancient Roman Sculpture from the Torlonia Collection, features a selection of 58 significant works, including portrait busts, large-scale figures of deities, and ornate sarcophagi. This event represents a unique opportunity for American audiences to engage with one of the most important private collections of ancient art.

The Torlonia Collection, which consists of over six hundred pieces spanning three centuries of antiquities, was primarily displayed at the Torlonia Museum in Rome until its closure at the start of World War II. For decades, many of these masterpieces remained unseen, not returning to public view until 2020. This exhibition will include 24 newly restored works, some of which have not been displayed in nearly a century.

A Glimpse into Ancient Rome

The sculptures on display date from approximately the 5th century BC to the 2nd century AD, with a significant number reflecting the High Imperial period of the 1st to 2nd centuries AD. This era is recognized for its remarkable artistic achievements and innovation in Roman sculpture. The collection is known for its intimate yet monumental pieces that capture the grandeur of ancient Roman culture and artistry.

The careful study and preservation of these works have been supported by the collaboration with Bvlgari at the Laboratori Torlonia. The Torlonia Foundation has worked diligently to ensure that these important artifacts are not only preserved but also made accessible to a broader audience through this exhibition. The program is further enhanced by the support of Chiomenti.

Collaborative Efforts for Cultural Exchange

Co-organized by the Art Institute of Chicago and the Torlonia Foundation, this exhibition is also in collaboration with the Kimbell Art Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This partnership aims to facilitate cultural exchange and provide a platform for deeper appreciation of ancient Roman art.

Visitors to the exhibition can expect to encounter not only the physical beauty of the sculptures but also the rich history they embody. The Torlonia Collection serves as a testament to the artistic legacy of ancient Rome, offering insights into the civilization’s cultural and historical context.

As the exhibition opens its doors, it promises to captivate audiences and provide a rare glimpse into a collection that has shaped the understanding of Roman art for generations. The opportunity to view these masterpieces in person marks a significant moment in the appreciation of ancient history and artistry.
