Kaweah Health Appoints Marc Mertz as New CEO Following Leadership Transition

Kaweah Health, located in Visalia, has appointed Marc Mertz as its new Chief Executive Officer. The announcement was made on Monday by the hospital’s board of directors, following the retirement of long-serving CEO Gary Herbst. Mertz, who previously held the position of chief strategy officer at the hospital, is expected to lead Kaweah Health into its next phase of growth and development.

The board expressed confidence in Mertz’s capabilities, citing his extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, physician services growth, and system-wide strategy. “We are excited for Marc to step into the position of CEO,” stated Mike Olmos, President of the Kaweah Health Board. He added, “Marc is the right person to guide Kaweah Health through the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”

Mertz Brings Extensive Healthcare Experience

Mertz has a robust background in healthcare, boasting over 30 years of experience in various roles focused on consulting and hospital-physician alignment. Prior to joining Kaweah Health in 2018, he served as vice president and physician services practice leader at GE Healthcare in El Segundo. Since his arrival at Kaweah, Mertz has been instrumental in building partnerships with esteemed institutions such as the Cleveland Clinic and Valley Children’s Hospital, enhancing the resources available to the community.

In addition to his strategic initiatives, Mertz has acted as a liaison between the hospital and local, state, and national officials. He has also overseen community engagement efforts and worked closely with the patient experience team to improve care delivery. “I’m honored to have the confidence of the Board to serve Kaweah Health as its new CEO,” Mertz remarked. “During my time here, I have witnessed firsthand the fantastic care we provide to our patients. I am proud of our legacy and accomplishments, and I look forward to working with our employees and our medical staff to reach new levels of high-quality, compassionate care for our community.”

Transitioning Leadership at Kaweah Health

Mertz’s appointment comes at a pivotal moment for Kaweah Health as it navigates the ongoing challenges of the healthcare landscape. Herbst, who had been affiliated with the hospital for 34 years in various capacities, announced his retirement in June, leaving a significant legacy at the institution. Under his leadership, Kaweah Health has grown and adapted to the evolving needs of its patients and the community.

The transition to Mertz’s leadership marks a continuation of Kaweah Health’s commitment to quality healthcare and community service. With a focus on enhancing patient care and expanding healthcare access, Mertz’s experience and understanding of the organization are seen as vital assets in this new role. As he steps into the position of CEO, both staff and community members are hopeful for a future marked by innovation and compassion in care.
