Local Communities Celebrate with Events: Turkey Trot, Chili Cook-Off, and More

A series of community events is set to take place this weekend in Albert Lea and Wells, providing opportunities for residents to come together and celebrate. From charity fundraisers to festive activities, these gatherings promise to engage attendees of all ages.

First Lutheran Church in Albert Lea will host its “I Believe in Angels” event on November 25, 2023, from 08:30 to 11:30 a.m. This event will feature a brunch that includes egg bake, pastries, a frozen fruit cup, and coffee. Attendees can also enjoy a selection of crafts, sweet treats, gift baskets, books, games, puzzles, and quilts. A quilt raffle will be held, alongside the traditional Norwegian delicacy, lefse. Sponsored by the women of the church, the event aims to support local and global missions.

In Wells, the annual Wells Does It Bright event will take place on November 24, 2023, from 16:00 to 19:00 in downtown Wells. This festive occasion features activities suitable for the whole family, including live reindeer, visits from Santa and Mrs. Claus, and a cozy bonfire. Craft vendors will set up shop, and children can enjoy face painting, horse-drawn wagon rides, and crafts at the library. Additional activities include a movie screening, bounce houses at Living Wells Church, and more.

The following day, the Wells Community Ambulance Service will organize its inaugural Heroes Turkey Trot fun run/walk. Registration opens at 09:00 at the Wells ambulance garage, with the run/walk commencing at 10:00. The entry fee is $25, and participants can register online at runtheday.com/register/detail/wcas-turkey-trot-2025/. Costumes inspired by heroes or Thanksgiving themes are encouraged, with a prize awarded for the best ensemble.

On the same day, Oakland Lutheran Church in rural Albert Lea will celebrate its 10th annual Chili Cook-Off starting at 11:00 a.m. Participants will have the chance to taste and rate various chili entries, with cash prizes awarded to the winners and runners-up. The event will also include a silent auction, a bake sale, and a baked potato bar. A drawing for half a hog will take place, and attendees can enjoy live polka music provided by Hans the Music Man. Admission costs $12 for adults and $6 for children aged 6 to 12, while children aged 5 and under can eat for free. Those wishing to enter the cook-off can contact the church via email or phone.

Meanwhile, the Geneva Bar and Grill will feature live music by Jamison Murphy on Saturday evening, starting at 17:30. A happy hour will run from 14:30 to 18:00, with darts and pool available for patrons from 16:00 until closing time. Additionally, the Geneva Community Center will host a turkey bingo fundraiser benefiting the Geneva Volunteer Fire Department at 18:30. Participants can play 40 games for $20 per card, with two door prizes and a pie auction also on the agenda. Refreshments, including pop, coffee, water, and popcorn, will be available, and the evening’s winner will receive a turkey. Proceeds from this event will contribute towards the purchase of a new fire truck.

These events not only highlight the spirit of community engagement but also provide opportunities for residents to support local causes while enjoying seasonal festivities.
