Browns Legend Bernie Kosar Remains Positive Amid Health Struggles

Bernie Kosar, the former quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, is displaying remarkable optimism as he awaits a critical liver transplant. This follows a series of health challenges, including more than seven surgeries and a recent week-long hospital stay at University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Kosar’s scheduled transplant was postponed when doctors discovered an infection in the donor organ.

From his hospital room, Kosar shared an update on his condition, emphasizing his commitment to remaining positive. “I can’t wake up without thinking of some of the great words of some of my awesome coaches, like Coach Howard Schnellenberger and Coach Don Shula,” he said. He recalled their advice on the importance of daily improvement, stating, “You get better or worse.”

During his recovery, Kosar has been battling internal bleeding, which necessitated multiple surgical procedures. He highlighted his current medical situation, showing the equipment surrounding him, including several IVs. “You can see all the IVs behind me. Left hand all really loaded up with a couple IVs and a midline. Getting ready to attack the day,” he remarked.

While Kosar indicated that the internal bleeding has slowed, he reiterated the necessity of receiving a liver transplant to ensure his long-term health. Additionally, he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a condition that adds another layer to his health challenges.

Support for Kosar has poured in from various corners, including Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, who expressed his well-wishes for Kosar’s recovery. “Well Bernie we love you, and we just pray for you and hope you get better. You’ve given back so much to the Cleveland area and to Youngstown and really the whole world, and you’re someone who’s very, very special,” DeWine stated.

Kosar’s fighting spirit serves as an inspiration to many. He stressed the importance of health and wellness, stating, “I wake up early and I make the conscious decision each and every day to be better, especially to all the people, families and communities who we’re able to touch in the course of our day. You matter! Let’s all have a winning day.”

As Kosar awaits the next steps in his medical journey, his resilience and positive outlook continue to resonate, reflecting not only his personal battle but also his desire to uplift those around him. Fans and supporters remain hopeful for his recovery and future health.
