Kevin J. McAloon, a distinguished engineer and beloved family member, passed away on September 16, 2025, at the age of 89. His contributions to the aerospace industry and his passion for life left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, to parents John H. McAloon and Eileen A. O’Sullivan McAloon, Kevin demonstrated a commitment to education early on. He completed grammar school at Notre Dame Academy in Watsonville, California, before graduating from St. Ignatius High School in Chicago. Following high school, Kevin served two years in the U.S. Army, a period that shaped his character and work ethic.
Kevin pursued higher education with determination, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Detroit and later a Master’s degree from the University of Southern California. His professional career spanned three decades in the aerospace sector, where he worked with notable companies such as Douglas Aircraft, Northrop, and TRW, where he dedicated 23 years before retiring in 1992.
A Life Beyond Engineering
Even after retirement, Kevin remained active in the industry, providing consulting services at TRW and Northrop Grumman for an additional nine years. Outside of his professional life, he embraced a variety of hobbies. Kevin was an avid motorcycle rider, relishing both dirt and street biking. He cherished local and cross-country trips with his children, creating unforgettable memories.
Running was another passion; he completed four marathons, three of which he ran with his son. His love for fitness continued as he transitioned to cycling, enjoying rides on the scenic Palos Verdes peninsula and later on the farm roads in the Sacramento Valley. His interest in farming technology developed during this time, showcasing his curiosity and willingness to learn.
Kevin is survived by his four children, including Karen, two grandchildren, Jack and Madeleine, and four nieces and nephews: Jack, Maureen, Jim, and Kathy. His family fondly recalls not only his professional achievements but also his quick wit, charm, and deep love for life.
A Legacy of Love and Humor
The family shared a heartfelt tribute, stating, “The above was written by our dad to be precise and economical and we have faithfully submitted it. But he never said we couldn’t add to it, so – he will be missed. His wit, his charm, his kindness, his deep love of salt, his Irish humour. May the wind always be at your back.” This sentiment reflects the profound impact Kevin had on those around him, ensuring that his legacy will endure in their hearts and memories.
