BREAKING: Evacuees from Guantanamo Bay, who sought shelter at NAS Pensacola due to the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa, are now returning home as recovery efforts progress. The storm, which struck in late October 2023, resulted in significant damages across the region, prompting immediate evacuations for safety.
Following the storm, NAS Pensacola provided vital support to the evacuees, including food, clothing, and emergency assistance. Local organizations and the community stepped up, ensuring that those affected received the care they needed. “From the onset of us receiving the order to execute, we were out the door, and once we arrived at NAS Pensacola, the team did an amazing job,” said Command Master Chief Kenneth Nixon of Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.
The Emergency Family Assistance Center at NAS Pensacola was activated to assist evacuees, with contributions from the American Red Cross and the United Services Organization (USO). Together, they provided essential supplies to help those displaced feel more at home. “What it’s really truly about is sailors taking care of sailors,” Nixon added, expressing gratitude for the community’s extensive support.
After three weeks of hard work to repair damage from Hurricane Melissa, conditions at Guantanamo Bay have improved, allowing evacuees to return to their families and homes. “The community was very receptive, and they welcomed us with open arms,” Nixon remarked, emphasizing the overwhelming support from local residents.
Captain Chandra ‘Mamassan’ Newman, Naval Air Station Commanding Officer, praised the community’s efforts and the resilience of the evacuees. “I couldn’t be prouder of the team, prouder of the community we serve and that supports us,” he stated.
As of today, evacuees are making their way back home, bringing with them not just belongings but also the gratitude of a community that rallied together in their time of need. Authorities continue to monitor the recovery process, ensuring that all affected are supported during this transition.
