Valwood School Honors Veterans with Moving Annual Ceremony

Hahira, Georgia, became a focal point of gratitude on November 11, 2025, as Valwood School hosted its annual Veterans Day program, attracting hundreds of veterans and guests. This cherished tradition celebrates the service and sacrifice of individuals who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

Veterans arriving at the school were warmly welcomed by first graders waving American flags and coaches driving golf carts. Upper school students and parents assisted with name tag distribution, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie and respect. Inside the venue, third graders played a special role by handing out programs and small Army figurines to attendees.

The event commenced with a welcoming address by John Davis, Head of School. Following his remarks, students took center stage, leading the Pledge of Allegiance and reciting Red Skelton’s interpretation of its meaning. The audience was treated to a series of musical performances, including renditions of “Star-Spangled Banner,” “America the Beautiful,” and “Battle Hymn of the Republic.” Each branch of the military—the Army, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and Air Force—was honored with its respective service song, prompting veterans to stand proudly in recognition of their service.

This year’s program marked a special dedication of the school’s flagpole to three World War II veterans who have consistently attended since the program’s inception in 2008. Davis read a heartfelt inscription honoring James Herring, John McGowan, and George Aigen for their enduring legacy. The inscription read: “In Memory of James Herring, John McGowan, and George Aigen, World War II veterans, faithful participants in our veterans program since its inception. Their service and sacrifice embody the spirit of the Greatest Generation.”

The ceremony concluded with the stirring performances of “God Bless America” and “God Bless the USA.”

Connecting Generations Through Personal Stories

The tradition of honoring veterans at Valwood School began in 2007 when a heartfelt letter from an eighth-grade student sparked a meaningful connection with a veteran. This initial act of gratitude evolved into a shared lunch and ultimately led to the establishment of the annual program. Today, invitations are still handwritten by middle school students, reflecting the personal touch that inspired the first gathering.

Over the years, the program has significantly expanded. Eighth graders now write the script and perform solos, while sixth and seventh graders form the chorus. Upper school students also contribute with special musical performances and monologues, enriching the experience for all attendees.

Vallye Blanton, the program director, expressed the profound impact of the event: “Each year, we are humbled by the presence of our veterans and the opportunity for our students to learn directly from their experiences. Their stories instill in our students a deep appreciation for service, sacrifice, and citizenship.”

After the formal program, veterans were invited to a brunch with middle school students, fostering connections with young people who often return to greet “their” veterans from previous years.

Valwood School’s annual Veterans Day program stands as a testament to the dedication of the community in honoring those who have served. With a legacy spanning 17 years, the event not only recognizes the sacrifices made by veterans but also bridges the gap between generations, ensuring that the stories of courage and devotion are passed on to future generations.
