BREAKING: The Yale Bulldogs men’s fencing team has launched its season with a stunning performance at the Vassar Open Invitational, winning all five bouts this past weekend. The Bulldogs, who finished last season with a commendable record of 18-7, demonstrated their dominance right from the start, defeating teams with scores such as 21-6 against Drew University and Stevens College.
The Bulldogs kicked off the invitational by overpowering Drew University, securing a decisive 21-6 victory. They followed up with another commanding win against Stevens College, also finishing 21-6. The action continued as Yale defeated Lafayette College 19-8 and Johns Hopkins University 18-9. They capped off the day with a strong performance against Sacred Heart University, winning 19-8.
Captain Jordan Silberzweig expressed his excitement in an email, stating, “After months of preparation and long morning practices, we came in hungry to compete at a high level.” The infectious enthusiasm from the squad, bolstered by a promising incoming class, sets a positive tone for the season ahead.
Looking back, the Bulldogs faced challenges last season, particularly at the Ivy League Invitational where they lost all four matches. However, with three returning NCAA Championship qualifiers—Silberzweig, Tony Whelan, and Castor Kao, who is currently ranked sixth in the country in foil—expectations are high for improved results.
The women’s team also made headlines over the weekend, posting a record of 6-1 at their tournament. They achieved impressive wins against Yeshiva University (21-0) and Lafayette College (20-1), while narrowly losing to Cornell by just one point, 13-14. Captain Amanda O’Donnell highlighted the team’s strength, noting their solid performance against Brown, which sets a positive trajectory for the upcoming season.
O’Donnell commented, “The past meet went well. We beat six teams, including Brown, which set a really good tone for the rest of the season.” She mentioned the anticipation for the Ivy League Championships, especially with two more starters expected to return to the lineup.
Both teams are gearing up for their next competition at the Tri-State Shark Showcase in Brooklyn on November 23, where they aim to build on their early successes and showcase their growth and determination.
As the season unfolds, the Bulldogs are not just competing; they are building a legacy of resilience and success in collegiate fencing. Fans and alumni are eager to see how these promising starts translate into the championship aspirations for both teams. Stay tuned for more updates as the Yale Bulldogs continue their quest for glory this season!
