UPDATE: Guam Community College (GCC) has just unveiled its newly renovated Student Success Center during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the Mangilao campus. This significant development marks a major capital improvement project that began in July 2022, reaffirming GCC’s commitment to enhancing educational facilities for its students and the community.
The 6,000-square-foot facility, also known as Building B, serves as a central hub for student services, housing the Assessment and Counseling Department, GCC Identification Card Services, and the Faculty Senate office. A state-of-the-art computer lab complete with an outdoor veranda is located on the second floor, designed to foster creativity and innovation among students.
“Most importantly, this building serves as the heart of our campus—where student learning, creativity, and success begin,” said GCC President Mary A.Y. Okada. She emphasized that student feedback was crucial in shaping the project, stating, “Our students were the driving force behind this project, just like they have been for many other efforts on campus.”
The new Student Success Center is not just a testament to GCC’s dedication to its learners but also to sustainability. The facility meets Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards, marking it as the eighth environmentally sustainable building on campus.
Okada expressed gratitude towards her team, stating, “Everything they do supports our students,” highlighting their effort in design, grant writing, procurement, construction, and maintenance. The project’s funding totaled $6.3 million, sourced from the Governor’s Education Stabilization Fund and GCC’s Capital Projects Fund, ensuring the college incurred no debt.
“If you look around our campus, you’ll see that we’re constantly finding creative ways to fund our capital projects through multiple sources. That’s our strength—and our promise to the community,” added Okada.
This urgent enhancement of facilities is expected to significantly improve the student experience at GCC, providing essential resources for academic success. As the college continues to expand and innovate, the Student Success Center stands as a powerful symbol of its mission: “Students first, mission always.”
As the community engages with this new facility, all eyes are on how these improvements will impact student learning and success in the coming months. Stay tuned for further developments as GCC continues its commitment to educational excellence.
