Paradise’s Population Surges 40% Post-Fire: Urgent Updates

UPDATE: The town of Paradise, California, is experiencing a dramatic population surge of 40% since the devastating 2018 Camp Fire, according to new estimates from the California Department of Finance. As of January 2025, Paradise’s population stands at 11,088, marking a significant recovery from its pre-fire population of 26,500.

Paradise’s recovery and economic development director, Colette Curtis, reveals that this growth primarily comes from newcomers, with most of the recent arrivals being first-time residents. “For the first few years post-fire, we saw many returners, but now it’s shifting,” Curtis stated. “More newcomers are moving here than residents returning.” This trend has led to a younger demographic, with school populations reaching 50% of their pre-fire numbers.

Housing has seen explosive growth as well. Since 2019, Paradise has received 3,634 applications for single-family homes, with 2,968 already completed. Additionally, 1,022 applications for multi-family units have been submitted, indicating a robust rebuilding effort. The average home price has surged to $454,000, up from $325,000 before the fire. This price hike poses challenges, as many residents struggle to secure affordable insurance due to rising rates.

With the town’s infrastructure undergoing significant renovations, including the repaving of roads and the underground placement of utilities, residents are facing temporary inconveniences. Curtis noted, “It’s a lot of construction, detours, and road closures, making it difficult to live in this environment right now.”

While the largest employer in Paradise has shifted from the now-closed Adventist Health Feather River Hospital to the school district, access to health care remains a pressing issue. Many residents find themselves traveling to nearby towns for essential medical services, amplifying the community’s need for improved health facilities.

This rapid growth and ongoing development in Paradise highlight the resilience of the community as it rebuilds after one of California’s most devastating wildfires. As new families settle in, the town is not just recovering; it is transforming into a vibrant, youthful community ready for the future.

Residents and potential newcomers are encouraged to participate in local discussions about the ongoing changes, as Paradise continues to adapt and evolve in the wake of adversity. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
