The New York Jets have made significant roster changes by acquiring wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and John Metchie III in trades aimed at reinvigorating their offense. Mitchell, previously with the Indianapolis Colts, joined the Jets as part of a deal that saw star cornerback Sauce Gardner move to Indianapolis. The trade also secured the Jets two first-round draft picks in 2026 and 2027.
Mitchell’s connection with Jets coach Aaron Glenn predates his arrival in New York, as both have ties to Ridge Point High School in Texas. Glenn discovered this connection when he learned that his daughter attended the same school as Mitchell. “Pretty funny story,” Glenn remarked. The coach expressed his excitement about the new addition and emphasized the potential for Mitchell to thrive in a new environment.
Mitchell’s time with the Colts had its challenges. He fell out of favor after a notable mishap in a game against the Los Angeles Rams, where he fumbled before reaching the end zone, resulting in a costly touchback. This season, Mitchell recorded only two catches for 15 yards over five games. Reflecting on his past experiences, he stated, “I hate that it didn’t work out, but I’m excited to be here.” He is eager to contribute as a complementary piece alongside the Jets’ leading receiver, Garrett Wilson.
John Metchie III Embraces New Opportunities
In a separate transaction, John Metchie III also joined the Jets from Philadelphia, where he had been traded after a brief stint with the Houston Texans. The Jets acquired Metchie in exchange for cornerback Michael Carter II. This marks Metchie’s second trade of the season, an experience he views optimistically. “I’m more of an optimist, so it was just more opportunistic,” he noted regarding the change.
Metchie, a second-round pick in 2022, has faced adversity, having missed his entire rookie season due to a leukemia diagnosis. He has since made strides, although his statistics this season reflect four catches for only 18 yards. Glenn praised Metchie’s skills, particularly in the slot position, where his quickness and route-running ability can significantly impact the Jets’ offensive strategy. “Metchie is a really good slot receiver,” Glenn said. “He is a master when it comes to the route concepts in the slot.”
Both players face an adjustment period with their new team. Glenn indicated that their understanding of the Jets’ system is still developing, and their participation in the upcoming game against the Cleveland Browns remains uncertain. “They’re still learning our system,” he explained. The Jets are set to host the Browns on November 12, 2025, at 1 p.m. on CBS New York.
As the Jets strive to enhance their performance this season, the fresh starts for Mitchell and Metchie could be pivotal in their quest for success on the field.
