Saugus, Swampscott Secure $688K in Urgent Housing Upgrades

UPDATE: The Executive Office of Housing and Livable Communities has just announced significant funding to enhance public housing in Saugus and Swampscott, with a total of $688,706.82 allocated for urgent construction upgrades. This critical financial support is designed to improve safety and living conditions for residents, and it could not come at a better time.

The Saugus Housing Authority is set to receive $555,492.17 specifically for essential roof replacements. Meanwhile, the Swampscott Housing Authority will benefit from $133,214.65 earmarked for kitchen and bathroom renovations. These vital upgrades are part of a broader initiative established under the Affordable Homes Act, championed by Gov. Maura Healey.

State Senator Brendan Crighton emphasized the importance of these investments, stating, “Investing in our public housing authorities is crucial to ensure that their buildings are safe, comfortable, and meet the energy efficiency needs of current times.” Crighton highlighted the collaboration with the Healey-Driscoll Administration, expressing pride in the funding allocated for these critical projects.

Representative Jenny Armini echoed these sentiments, noting that the upgrades will significantly enhance safety for Swampscott residents. “These are not niceties. Outdated and broken appliances, utility connections, and dilapidated cabinets pose risks that can lead to serious accidents,” Armini explained. “By prioritizing these living spaces, we prioritize community safety.”

In Saugus, Representative Jessica Giannino called the funding vital for ensuring the longevity and quality of public housing in the district. She praised the Healey-Driscoll Administration for their strong partnership, stating, “They have listened to our needs and delivered critical investments that help maintain and upgrade our public assets.”

Representative Donald Wong reinforced the urgency of the funding, declaring, “This investment is essential to upgrading and ensuring the safety of our state-funded public housing buildings. We must maintain these facilities to protect the well-being of residents who rely on them.”

The Chair of the Swampscott Housing Authority, Charlie Patsios, expressed gratitude for the received funding but emphasized the need for more resources to support vulnerable seniors and residents in the community. “We’re certainly thankful for what we have received so far, but we need more funding to adequately support our residents,” Patsios stated.

As the funding initiatives roll out, both housing authorities are poised to implement these upgrades swiftly to enhance living conditions. The immediate impact of these renovations will be felt by residents who have endured outdated and unsafe living environments.
