BREAKING: Micron Technology’s construction timeline for its semiconductor fabrication plants in Clay has been significantly revised, with delays stretching into 2041 according to the newly released Final Environmental Impact Statement (FEIS). While tree clearing is still set to begin this year, the construction of four fabs will now take longer than previously anticipated to accommodate utility needs.
Construction for Fab 1 is now scheduled to commence in the second quarter of 2028, with operations starting as late as the third quarter of 2030. This marks a two-year delay from earlier projections. Similarly, Fab 2 will not break ground until the last quarter of 2030, pushing its opening back to the last quarter of 2033, a three-year setback.
The timeline for Fab 3 has also shifted, with construction beginning in the third quarter of 2035, and Fab 4 facing a quarterly delay to complete by 2041. The phased construction process will span an estimated 16 years and is contingent on receiving necessary permits and approvals.
The revised timeline not only impacts the fabs but also delays essential worker support facilities. The start of construction for the childcare site will now shift from 2026 to 2028, while health care and recreation centers will be postponed from 2030 to 2032. Additionally, securing warehouse space will be pushed to November 2028 due to the later initiation of wafer production.
The construction delay raises concerns about job creation, as the facility is projected to generate over 9,000 permanent onsite operational jobs by 2045. The FEIS emphasizes that despite these new timelines, the overall completion of the Micron Campus, including Fab 4, remains set for 2041, with full production expected by the end of 2045.
As Micron navigates these challenges, the broader semiconductor landscape could face implications, particularly in workforce development and local economic growth. The urgency of these developments has stirred discussions among industry experts and local stakeholders, emphasizing the need for timely updates and strategic planning.
