UPDATE: Two hikers were rescued from the treacherous trails of Mount Rose, Nevada, on November 2, 2023, as winter conditions pose significant dangers for backcountry users. The first rescue took place in the Ophir Creek drainage earlier in the day when emergency units were dispatched to assist an injured hiker. NLTFPD crews, alongside the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue, provided critical medical care before safely extricating the individual for transport to a local hospital.
Later that evening, NLTFPD teams faced another challenge on the Mount Rose Summit Trail, where they assisted a distressed hiker back to their vehicle without further incident.
In light of these rescues, the NLTFPD issued an urgent reminder to all backcountry enthusiasts: “Trail conditions are changing rapidly, with snow and ice now present in many areas. Please use caution, wear proper footwear, and carry essentials to stay safe in varying conditions.”
