UPDATE: Voters in Parma, Parma Heights, and Seven Hills have decisively rejected a crucial school operating levy, delivering a stark message once again to local officials. Final, unofficial results from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections show that 57.59% (12,097 votes) opposed Issue 49, while only 42.41% (8,907 votes) supported it.
This 10-year, 6.9-mil operational levy was designed to generate $23,131,939 annually to support Parma City Schools through 2030. If passed, it would have cost homeowners approximately $20.13 a month based on a $100,000 home valuation.
Parma City Schools Superintendent Scott Hunt expressed disappointment but noted it was not surprising. “I’m not surprised we didn’t make it through,” he stated, acknowledging the challenges of securing public funding. This marks a continuation of recent struggles, as similar efforts were defeated by residents in 2017 and 2018.
As the district prepares to face the financial implications of this defeat, Hunt emphasized the urgent need for discussions about potential budget cuts. “We’re going to have to talk about what adjustments need to be made,” he said. This includes reevaluating staffing levels, programs, transportation, and pay-to-participate fees.
“While our budget keeps us above our cash reserve policy this year, we are still in a precarious financial situation,” Hunt added. The district last passed a new money operating levy in 2011, making this rejection particularly impactful as they look to maintain operational stability.
Looking ahead, the board of education must decide whether to present the same levy again in the spring. However, Hunt warned, “The finances aren’t going to look any better in May than they do right now.”
In related news, the race for the Parma City Schools Board of Education saw three candidates running unopposed for three open seats. Leah Euerle received 8,442 votes, Nick Reyes garnered 8,240 votes, and Tammie Sebastian obtained 8,169 votes. Board members are compensated $125 per meeting, with an annual cap of $5,000.
As the community grapples with the implications of this vote, urgent conversations about the future of education funding in the area are set to unfold. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay informed as developments progress.
