Delivery Truck Strikes Robinson Middle School Overpass, No Injuries Reported

UPDATE: A delivery truck collided with the overpass at Robinson Middle School in Lowell at approximately 1:30 PM today, causing cosmetic damage but fortunately resulting in no injuries. The incident occurred as the truck attempted to pass beneath the overpass connecting the school’s main campus to the gymnasium.

Principal Bridget Dowling assured parents in a letter that student safety remains the school’s top priority. “Please know that student safety is always our top priority,” Dowling stated. The affected area has been secured, and city engineers have been called to assess the situation.

The delivery truck, reportedly from McAuliffe Elementary School located at 570 Beacon St., struck the base of the overpass due to insufficient clearance. Lowell Police responded swiftly to the scene, documenting the damage, which has been described as similar to the siding of a house.

Deputy Superintendent Mark LeBlanc confirmed that the structural integrity of the building was intact following an inspection. “The steel I-beam supporting the structure was untouched and structurally sound,” he stated.

City Manager Tom Golden noted that this isn’t the first incident at this location, remarking, “In fact, that same spot has been hit previously.” While the overpass has not gained notoriety like Lowell’s infamous Spaghettiville Bridge, which is known for truck accidents, the city is now taking the necessary steps to prevent future occurrences.

Classes at Robinson Middle School have resumed as scheduled, with no disruption to the students’ day. The community is urged to remain vigilant regarding vehicle clearance when navigating under school overpasses.
