Garland Community Mourns Loss of Longtime Commissioner S.J. Smith

BREAKING: The town of Garland is grieving the loss of longtime Commissioner Sanford Walter “S.J.” Smith Jr., who passed away on October 27, 2025, at the age of 81. Known for his unwavering dedication to public service, Smith’s death has sent ripples of sorrow through the community he served for over four decades.

Smith, a lifelong resident of Garland, devoted more than 40 years to enhancing the town’s infrastructure, overseeing improvements to roads, public works, and community buildings. His leadership was characterized by a steadfast commitment to the residents of Garland, and his influence spanned generations.

During his final town meeting in 2020, Smith expressed profound gratitude to the community, stating, “I appreciate being part of this town where I was born and raised.” His niece, Mary Smith, praised her uncle’s relentless work ethic, noting, “If everyone had a heart like his, we wouldn’t have so many problems in the world.”

Smith is survived by his siblings, Ellen Gray Smith Strickland, Charles Herman Smith, and Garry Wayne Smith, along with numerous nieces and nephews who looked up to him for guidance and inspiration.
