Shaker Heights Matches Donations to Combat Food Insecurity

Shaker Heights, Ohio, is stepping up to address food insecurity as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits face challenges during the federal government shutdown. The city has announced a program to match local donations to the Hunger Network of Greater Cleveland, offering a dollar-for-dollar match up to $10,000. This initiative, titled “Shaker Shares: Neighbors Helping Neighbors,” will remain active through November 30, 2023.

Local officials encourage residents and employees in Shaker Heights to contribute funds, stating that every donation made through the Hunger Network’s website will directly support the Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center. This center has been experiencing increased demand due to the suspension of federal food benefits. Mayor David Weiss highlighted the community’s spirit, noting the eagerness of residents to assist those reliant on federal food support.

Increased Demand for Food Assistance

From January to September of this year, the Shaker Heights Community Hunger Center served an average of 84 households each month. However, in October, this number surged, with the food distribution site located at the Shaker Heights Community Church serving 133 households. As Thanksgiving approaches, additional food distribution events are scheduled for November 17, 19, 24, and 26.

“This effort can make a real difference,” Weiss emphasized. “I urge Shaker residents who are able to make a donation to the Hunger Network to help our neighbors during this difficult time.”

Additional Resources for Those in Need

Recognizing the increased need for food assistance, the city has also made available a list of resources to support individuals facing food insecurity. The resources include:

  • United Way 211: A free and confidential referral service available 24/7, connecting individuals to nearly 1,700 agencies. Residents can simply call 211.
  • The Greater Cleveland Food Bank: An interactive map for locating nearby food distribution sites is available on their website or by calling (216) 738-2067.
  • Little Free Food Pantries: Outdoor pantry boxes with 24/7 access are located at various churches in Shaker Heights, including Christ Episcopal Church and East View UCC.

  • Our Lady of Peace Church: Offers pre-packed food bags on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at their church office.

The city of Shaker Heights plans to update the list of resources as more options become available to ensure that residents remain informed and supported during this challenging period. Through initiatives like the matching donation program, local leaders aim to strengthen community ties and provide essential assistance to those in need.
